26 April 2023 World Intellectual Property Day 2023 April 26th is World Intellectual Property Day. The main goal of World IP Day is to highlight the role that IP rights – such as patents, trademarks, designs and copyright – play in encouraging innovation and creativity in our society. WIPO – World Intellectual Property Office – chose April 26th as the day designated as World IP Day because it was the day on which the WIPO Convention entered into force in 1970. World IP Day 2023: women and IP The theme of World IP Day 2023 is “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”. On this day we celebrate the great women inventors, creators and entrepreneurs around the world. But it is also the day to highlight the gender gap in the IP system. Women are 49,59% of the global population and represent a big pool of talents, which to this day is still untapped. According to data released in March 2023 by WIPO, only 16,2% of the inventors named in the international patent applications in 2022 were women. There is a clear imbalance in women participation in creative and inventive activities. This occurs because women meet some barriers precluding access to the use of IP services. Among these barriers, WIPO identifies a lack of IP knowledge, but also a lack of role models and networks, difficulty in securing financial resources and facing negative bias. WIPO highlights how offering the necessary tools to connect women to the IP system is one of the most important challenges in order to accelerate innovation, business growth and creativity. On this matter, WIPO is actively working to reach gender equality and the full participation of women in the international IP system. World IP Day 2023 is the day to join forces and promote the development of a more inclusive IP system which accelerates innovation, creativity and business growth for the well-being of society. This theme is very important to us. Turini Group is proud to have a team of women professionals and lawyers that each day work and collaborate with our clients to help them protect their innovative ideas all over the world.
